Greenland

Greenland

There are journeys which we all dream to make in our lifetime and which we have promised ourselves to do year after year, one of those journeys is Greenland. This is a place that gives the visitor a chance to experience and explore the planets largest island while learning about the impacts of global warming at the edge of the Arctic.

Here you can encounter icebergs broken free from the coastline and adrift in the ocean their colours of blue, silver and white glowing in the unpolluted light, while above on starlit nights the Northern lights dance across the skies, shimmering sequences of pinks, blues and green illuminate the Arctic with natures own neon lights.

Watch out for blue whales and orcas as they feed in these wonderful rich waters or spend hours observing polar bears as they hunt along the coastline for their food.

Marvel at the Qooroq ice fjord, where each summer more than 250 million tons of icebergs break into the ocean and where the hissing of a thousand year old air bubbles can be heard as the ice breaks into the water. Greenland is the world's largest island at 2.18 million square km in area, about 700 times bigger than the Outer Hebrides. It is one of the most awesome places on earth and to be here is an amazing experience. The volume of ice in Greenland is estimated to be 2.85 million cubic km Ice believed to be 250,000 years old or more is stored at the deepest part of the centre of the ice sheet.

Imagine the feeling of following in the footsteps of Eric the Red, the infamous Viking who settled in Greenland in 982 and who farmed in a place called Brattahlid.

Greenland challenges the minds of all who encounter its shores. Nothing else compares to its enormity and presence before you. An encounter with its people will enrich your life forever and make you realize the need to protect this last great wilderness for all eternity.
